Are you looking to extend the life of the pumpkins you purchased for Halloween decor? I like to find ways to repurpose mine for the Thanksgiving holiday and this year I decorated them with gold foil! This did take a few hours and required the purchase of some supplies, but, overall it was a relatively easy DIY project.
I started with these small, white pumpkins that I purchased from Trader Joe’s for Halloween. I found this Speedball brand Gold Leaf Kit on Amazon that includes the adhesive, sealant, and gold foil. The directions were straight forward. First, apply adhesive to the area you want to cover with the gold leaf foil. The adhesive needs to cure for 30 minutes. I recommend using an artist’s sponge for application. It is very watery and will ruin your table, so be sure to protect it before starting!
Applying the gold foil is the fun part! Simply remove a sheet of foil from the book then apply in the pattern of your choice. I used a paint brush to guide the placement of the foil as it ensured that the foil was flush against the pumpkin. Once you are happy with your design, it is time to apply the sealer. This is much more viscous than the adhesive. I used a fresh sponge for the application. Pat the sealant over any area where the gold foil is. The opaque color left behind will dry clear, don’t worry!
The best part of this project is that it does not need to be perfect! I also think it would be great for kids. Have fun with it because there is really no way you could go wrong. I also bought a few fall colored acrylic paints to add some leaves and vines! Use your imagination and bring them to your Thanksgiving gathering as a fun addition to the table decor!
Leave a comment and let me know if you have any ideas for all of the leftover gold foil I have! Happy Holidays to you!
